In addition, a total of $3,000 will be offered
as a hiring incentive to be paid in $1,000
increments - $1,000 for completion of a
satisfactory job performance after 3 months,
another $1,000 after 6 months, and the last
$1,000 increment with final completion of a
satisfactory job performance after 12 months
of employment.
This is a safety sensitive position;
therefore, it will be included in the random
drug testing as referred to in the
Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol
Ordinance.

| JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Deputy
Sheriff
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for
maintaining security in the jail and for
performing necessary functions to ensure the
safety and well-being of inmates, employees,
and visitors.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Assures security of facility by checking
all doors and locks, and by searching new
prisoners and checking visitors for
contraband; responsible for security of all
electronically-controlled jail doors.
- Performs all inmate booking functions,
including fingerprinting and photographing
inmates.
- Works the inmate housing units, which
includes taking head counts, making jail
checks, feeding inmates, monitoring
visitation, dispensing medication,
investigating inmate complaints, writing
reports, distributing mail, and
distributing, collecting, and accounting for
inmate razors.
- Works the front control desk (C-1),
which includes maintaining daily log of
admissions, releases, and other activities
during the shift.
- Works rear control (C-2), which includes
maintaining daily log of jail checks, head
counts, yard calls, etc.
- Oversees inmate recreation activities in
recreation yard and tower position.
- Maintains log to show inmate cell
assignment and total jail population.
- Watches monitors to view booking area
and front gate, and to scan interior of the
jail.
- Answers telephone and dispatches and
receives calls on police radio.
- Operates intercom system.
- Maintains files on inmates and their
property and all paperwork associated with
inmates and property.
- Operates GCIC/NCIC computer to check for
offenses and criminal history.
- Distributes inmate mail.
- Supervises inmate religious activity,
educational programs.
- Classifies inmates.
- Conducts investigations into inmate
complaints and disciplinary actions.
- Assists in distribution and collection
of commissary items and inmate clothing.
- Operates GCIC/NCIC computer to check for
offenses and criminal history. JMS Computer
Operations.
- Searches visitors.
- May transport mental patients to holding
facilities.
- Supervises trusties performing work
assignments.
- Testifies in court.
- Completes incident reports.
- Performs other related duties as
assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of law enforcement and the
corrections process.
- Knowledge of applicable state and
federal laws, unified government policies
and procedures, and departmental directives.
- Knowledge of the filing system.
- Knowledge of GCIC/NCIC and JMS computer
operations.
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Sergeant assigns
work in terms of general instructions. Work is
reviewed in progress and upon completion for
compliance with instructions and procedures,
accuracy, and the nature and propriety of
final results.
